Conversation i had with co-worker today. Me: your granddaughter wants to be a lawyer? Coworker: Well, she wants to be an attorney. *pauses* but i guess that is almost the same thing as a lawyer huh? Me: *blank stare*

  1. This ranks right up there with my cousin who, years ago, said "I want to be either an attorney, or a fashion model".

  3. Some people simply are not aware of the fact that there is more than one 'description/title' for that particular profession. If all you have ever heard someone called is an 'attorney' and you've never heard that an attorney and a lawyer are the same thing...well then you just don't know...and when someone points it out to you, then you become aware.

That was the perfect opportunity for you to school her on the fact that they are one and the same...she more than likely didn't know that lawyers and attorneys do the same thing. She more than likely had only heard her granddaughter say she wanted to be an attorney...never that she wanted to be a lawyer...simple mistake on the part of an older and/or uninformed individual...nothing to laugh at at all...in my opinion...*wink* Next time take that opportunity to TEACH/INFORM.

  4. I did take the opportunity to inform her that it is indeed one and the same and how attorney is the more formal term (for court docs and such) and lawyer is more for laymen. However, it was shocking for me to hear that she didn't know it was the same thing because I would figure that is something that is common knowledge.

  5. I understand what you are saying...not knocking you at all...it's just that sometimes we have to realize that what is 'common' for us...isn't for EVERYONE...no harm no foul...*wink*
